I was born in Cortina d‘Ampezzo, Italy in 1973 and studied arts and painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Bologna and HDK Berlin. I live and work in my studio in Varna, South Tirol, Italy.
Beyond Reality
My photographic operations go beyond the simple and direct relation to reality, made possible through the photographic medium. I stratify and cross reality with the imaginary and highlight the relation between the self and the space. It is not only to re-read or to re-define space, but to understand, interpret and bring into shape even the smallest detail. It is like housing parts of a whole in an image or establishing the unity of time within the disorders of history. Sometimes my works seem to melt into their hosting space and become constitutive part of it, even emphasising it. The works do not superpose the architecture, but arrive at an integration up to the limits of the most radical mimesis. My photographic operations can be defined as an authentic camouflage for the real. They invariably depart from their roots in order to bring the power of illusion into being.
“The space is a doubt: I have to continually identify, designate it. It is never mine, never it is given to me, I have to conquer it.” These lines written by Georges Perec reflect Giancarlo Lamonaca‘s attitude when facing reality. He does not limit himself to record what he is seeing. He has not a Medusean sight: he does not paralyse or fix the existent into an image, because he is conscious about the fact that there are no stable, immobile and immutable places.

Oltre la realtà
Le mie operazioni fotografiche travalicano il semplice e diretto rapporto con la realtà che è possibile instaurare con il mezzo fotografico. Stratifico e interseco la realtà con l’immaginario. Intendo mettere a nudo il rapporto del sé con lo spazio. Non si tratta allora solo di rileggere, di “ridefinire” luoghi, ma è un comprendere, interpretare e tradurre in forma anche un solo particolare. E' come ospitare in un'immagine parti di un intero o far percepire l'unità del tempo dentro il disordine della storia. Le mie opere, a volte, tendono addirittura a confondersi con lo spazio che le ospita, diventandone parte costitutiva, quasi ne fossero una sottolineatura. Non si sovrappongono all'architettura, ma si spingono fino a un'integrazione ai limiti della mimesi più radicale. Le mie operazioni fotografiche, alla fine, possono essere definite come un autentico depistaggio del reale. Partono invariabilmente dalla sua radice, ma per inaugurare la potenza dell'illusione.
“Lo spazio è un dubbio: devo continuamente individuarlo, designarlo. Non è mai mio, mai mi viene dato, devo conquistarlo”. Così scrive Georges Perec. Ed è un po' l'attitudine con cui Giancarlo Lamonaca si dispone di fronte al reale. Egli non si limita a registrare quanto vede. Il suo sguardo non è medusiaco: non paralizza, non fissa in immagine l'esistente, perchè egli è cosciente che non ci sono luoghi stabili, immobili, immutabili.
