Ich wurde 1973 in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italien, geboren und studierte Kunst und Malerei an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Bologna und an der HDK Berlin. Ich lebe und arbeite in meinem Atelier in Südtirol, Italien.
Jenseits der Realität
Meine künstlerische Praxis bewegt sich vorwiegend in der Fotografie, umfasst aber auch Videoarbeiten, ortsspezifische Interventionen, Plastiken und konzeptuelle Setzungen. Ausgangspunkt sind vorgefundene Situationen, die ich als Träger kultureller, sozialer und symbolischer Einschreibungen begreife. Mich interessiert die Frage, wie Realität hergestellt, gelesen und legitimiert wird. Der Raum erscheint dabei nicht als statisches Objekt, sondern als dynamisches Gefüge von Bedeutungen und Projektionen. Meine Interventionen wollen dessen verborgene Ebenen freilegen und Räume für alternative Lesarten des Bestehenden öffnen. Diese Praxis versteht sich nicht als Darstellung einer anderen Wirklichkeit, sondern als operative Verschiebung innerhalb des Realen selbst. In den Rissen des Vertrauten eröffne ich Möglichkeitsräume, die dem Sichtbaren bereits eingeschrieben sind, jedoch meist unbemerkt bleiben.

Diese von Georges Perec formulierten Zeilen beschreiben Giancarlo Lamonacas künstlerische Haltung gegenüber der Realität. Sein Interesse gilt nicht der bloßen Aufzeichnung des Sichtbaren. Sein Blick ist nicht medusenhaft – er erstarrt das Bestehende nicht, sondern begreift Realität als einen dynamischen Prozess. Denn Orte sind niemals stabil, unveränderlich oder abgeschlossen, sondern befinden sich stets in einem Zustand der Transformation.

Beyond Reality
My artistic operations go beyond the simple and direct relation to reality. I stratify and cross reality with the imaginary and highlight the relation between the self and the space. It is not only to re-read or to re-define space, but to understand, interpret and bring into shape even the smallest detail. Sometimes my works seem to melt into their hosting space and become constitutive part of it, even emphasizing it. These works do not superpose the reality, but arrive at an integration up to the limits of the most radical mimesis.
My interventions are first and foremost a challenge to the idea of reality and open up new fronts of dialogue with the existing. They are physical and symbolic actions that reflect the fascination of the legitimately ambiguous. The impulse of recording is not enough: the purpose is to realise that every realistic element conceals or implies something ambiguous, evasive, enigmatic. It is the need to expand and extend the known, real world by an estranging dimension and to show how every form of knowledge contains a kind of potential and hypothetical imaginary repertoire. In the spirit of Werner Heisenberg‘s aphorism, according to which the artist is able to ‘penetrate reality from within’, we are called upon to search for what does not exist, for the possible alternative, the other face of the world.

These lines written by Georges Perec reflect Giancarlo Lamonaca‘s attitude when facing reality. He does not limit himself to record what he is seeing. He has not a Medusean sight: he does not paralyse or fix the existent into an image, because he is conscious about the fact that there are no stable, immobile and immutable places.

Oltre la realtà
Le mie pratiche artistiche travalicano il semplice e diretto rapporto con la realtà. Stratifico e interseco la realtà con l’immaginario. Intendo mettere a nudo il rapporto del sé con lo spazio. Non si tratta allora solo di rileggere, di “ridefinire” luoghi, ma è un comprendere, interpretare e tradurre in forma anche un singolo particolare. Le mie opere, a volte, tendono a confondersi con lo spazio che le ospita, diventandone parte costitutiva, quasi ne fossero una sottolineatura. Non si sovrappongono alla realtà, ma si spingono fino a un'integrazione ai limiti della mimesi più radicale.
I miei interventi sono innanzitutto una sfida all‘idea di effetività e aprono nuovi fronti di dialogo con l‘esistente. Sono azioni fisiche e simboliche che riflettono il fascino del legittimamente ambiguo. L‘impulso del registrare non è sufficiente: l‘obiettivo è comprendere come ogni elemento realistico nasconde o implica qualcosa di ambiguo, evasivo, enigmatico. È la necessità di espandere ed estendere il mondo conosciuto e reale con una dimensione straniante e di mostrare come ogni forma di conoscenza nasconda una sorta di repertorio immaginario potenziale e ipotetico. Nello spirito dell‘aforisma di Werner Heisenberg, secondo cui l‘artista è in grado di “penetrare la realtà dall‘interno”, siamo chiamati a cercare ciò che non esiste, l‘alternativa possibile, l‘altra faccia del mondo.

Così scrive Georges Perec. Ed è un po' l'attitudine con cui Giancarlo Lamonaca si dispone di fronte al reale. Egli non si limita a registrare quanto vede. Il suo sguardo non è medusiaco: non paralizza, non fissa in immagine l'esistente, perchè egli è cosciente che non ci sono luoghi stabili, immobili, immutabili.
